Camouflaged Beauty Self Critque

After reviewing the content of my final piece, there are revisions I need to make. My personal critique on my project stemmed from changing different transitions and my chosen magazine covers were very pixilated. I felt the strongest portions were the first and last scenes. At this present time, my objective is to simplify and edited my piece for next week. Conceptually, everyone seemed to grasp my idea of camouflaged beauty as I translated it into this film. Therefore, after receiving feedback from my instructor and classmates, the steps for completing this project be pertain: 1) Photographing more images of myself after each item is applied. (Like a step-by step application) 2) Importing and editing my photos in Adobe Photoshop, then Adobe After Effects. 3) Using the grid format, placing several mask on each photo. I may try different shapes and overlaying masks into mask. 4) Speed up the pace for each square appearing on the screen. Having two or three appearing at a time. Then, once my piece is compositionally, visually, and conceptually pleasing I will render, compress, and burn onto a DVD.

Animatic Link

I found several animatics on a website called Storyboard Inc. Working as a pre-production method, these anima tics were used for major companies commercial advertising. I feel this method works well as a rough sketch for one's final product. I enjoyed producing this preliminary sketch and I feel it works very well as before and after examples. My animatic is a very abstract, college piece, however I would change certain qualities for improvement. My overall time range is 1 minute and each mask scenario will have 3 sec, in which action will occur.

Final Project

My final project idea is an extension of camouflage, and how people conceal their identies by projecting different characteristics they embody. As I reviewed my research package, I revisited words that related to camouflage such as to disguise, conceal, mislead, imitate, and hide. Once all my ideas were formulated and established, I began an elimination process of how I wanted the viewer to understand Tiffani’s interpretation of camouflage. The termonology I stated above, will be able to identify with my finished piece. I unpacked how identity could be concealed and I found several ways including split personalities, identification sources, aliases, etc. People commonly represent this idea on Halloween, when they dress-up in costumes and become impersonators. Therefore, I decided to use this theme by creating masks to represent how people accomplish displaying multiple personalities. My figures will be mobile, exemplifying human qualities and well blended into their surroundings. A hand will appear to rotate at the bottom of the screen and this will allow each frame to change. Towards the end, the hand will rise up from the bottom of the screen, grabbing the mask, as the persons identity is revealed, then immediatly concealed again.

Mask

The masking exercise was very interesting. Using a photograph I took at the zoo, I manipulated different elements by animating the still image. This film is a visual study of how camouflage works as an animal blends into its habitat. I feathered many sections of the photograph and my final composition was very innovative. I'm satisfied with my product, however practice can only perfect my skill.

Bubble Project Link

Ji Lee
"The Bubble Project"

Acting as an attack on dominant culture, Ji Lee’s “Bubble Project” was the most effective link in my opinion. This project exemplified how the media as well as artist, publicize their ideas; yet replicate them using different styles and techniques. The Bubble Project’s purpose was to allow freedom of speech in America, since artwork has always fore fronted a debate. Indeed, placing these bubble stickers on top of Ads, in New York City, would get the attention of a diverse audience. With the addition of text, these street and online bubble quotes were very intriguing and located everywhere on various signs. The text ranged from humor to serious, sad to funny. These quotes dealt with issues based on social commentary, sex/drugs, politics/religion, media/fashion, art/philosophy, humor, personal messages, and seeds. The positioning of text on an image, will always change its overall impression, therefore these compositions were presented to provoke questions as to its appropriation. But the question of “Whose the viewer,” is also dependent upon the images general perception. This project displayed the reality of being an American citizen and expressing your thoughts, ideas, and opinions freely.
I also found the yes-man link interesting. Through my research project, I explored the idea of alienation or imposters. This fact is what very well happens during an identity theft scheme.

Reasons To Riot

Matthew Thomas
“That Day”
2003
Video

As I observed Matthew Thomas’s film, “That Day,” my immediate reaction was “home sweet home.” The idea of warm, loving family/friend memories, triggered in my mind. In its entirety, this video has been constructed very creatively. The lighting situation was handled pleasantly by candles, which corresponded well with the picture frames. The idea of placing a video clip in a picture frame was unique, with the addition of motion effects. The voice recording, dialogue, and caption were particularly appealing; Thomas spoke all of which. However, there was major difference in the dialogue and lauguage spoken by the messenger and answering machine recording. Proper English vs. Ebonics/Slang was the main disparity, especially in the conversation. The caller expresses his opinion about changes Thomas has made in life, while insinuating this fact is why they haven’t talked in a while. The idea that one relocating to better himself in life, is looked at as being a trader or sell-out. The caller also refers to Thomas as being “white” several times during the message. Throughout the film, Thomas illustrates the fact that he really hasn’t changed. He still talks and acts that way, but there is a time and place for everything. After viewing the film, I feel as though Thomas was trying to make a statement that his success hasn’t made him forget his roots.

New Soap Critique

Somewhat happy with my final alterations on my soap commercial, I still feel there is needed improvement. I had the opportunity to reconstruct my storyboards, by adding and subtracting certain scenes and this brought about unity in piece. I tried to incorporate all the tranformations in Affect Effects and this allowed me to pratice each element. However, I would change my menu to another template, changing its design. As for the filmstrips, I would like to do more in the future. They are quick glimpses into the lives of others. I found my classmate's filmstrips interesting.

FEEDBACK FROM CLASS CRITIQUE

New idea!!!! Since everyone felt the rain and the woman's arm were very strong elements, i wanna REVISE my project. Maybe a woman who has been placed in an environment to find a bar of soap and rain is consistantly pouring down. She is getting dirty and weak, however she has to overcome this obstacle. She begans swinging her arm in order to fight off the rain, pressing her way through this situation. As she continues, she finds the soap, which cleanses her body and as a result the rain eases up. At this point, the rain becomes sensitive to her body, not harsh.

Moral-- Although things get hard and unbarable at times, NEVER GIVE UP....until you acheive your goal...

And the goal here is SOAP to clean her Body!!!!

Research Proposal

Motion Graphics Proposal
This research project allowed me the freedom to creatively express my thoughts, ideas, and opinions. As I began brainstorming different topic ideas, I thought about which subject’s would/could be transcribed into visually interesting compositions. After exploring a variety of interests, I decided to discover an important element in art, the significance of color, particularly green. After classifying everything I could possibly think of as green, I generated the following list: US currency, nature, camouflage, marijuana, Hulk, traffic lights, aliens, Islamic religion, reptiles, dragons, etc. Finally, during my presentation of these topics to my classmates, I received excellent feedback on how the idea of camouflage and aliens could possible be combined. They broaden my outlook on how these words could be defined, discovered, and discussed. Through the use of classmate suggestions and my own research, I have decided to explore how I can create short animations displaying unfamiliar elements that are concealed when something is perceived as a threat.
At the beginning WWI, camouflage was known but had never been seen, until one night a truck drove by and Picasso and Stein labeled it as being camouflage. Picasso amazedly cried out, “Yes it is we who made it, that is cubism.” From that point on, camouflage acted as an essential weapon of defense for military forces during combat. Camouflage is meant to disguise, conceal, imitate, mislead, hide, and has the ability to act on perceiving something as a threat. Camouflage’s scientific principle is to reduce the contrast between a target and its background, the contrast in size, shape, movement, and color. It is best employed when the subject is motionless and everything appears to be in sync. Depending upon the targets environment, the concealment of some elements is difficult to distinguish due to variations in light and color. Likewise, animals are affected by the same principles mentioned above. Camouflaged animals can be illustrated as dead or alive, therefore they have the ability to convert their fear, into intimidation for their predator. As I observed these photographs, I realized how much of an art form certain animals are, specifically those that occupy water.
Aliens are often illustrated as supernatural beings that are brought to earth from other planets or parts of the universe. Aliens are known as the other, foreign, unfamiliar, not belonging, or sometimes appearing as threat. In today’s society, aliens are often associated with citizens from other countries who illegally immigrate to the United States. As I continued researching, I found another definition for the term alien: strangers in a new environment or outcasts. As to the physical appearance of the idealistic alien, it’s a strange creature with an enormous head and eyes, yet the mouth and nose are rather small. I found it very interesting as to why the alien’s physical features resemble that of a young fetus in a human beings womb. During pregnancy, the baby or fetus has very precise similarities to that of what we perceive aliens as containing. Nevertheless, this extensive research involving these two terms has given me more insight into their many explanations.
In conclusion, both terms have very valuable meanings, which coincide with one another. My expectations are to create animations that might camouflage a strange situation or threat for the protections of a being. If we are given the freedom to create these animations with no specific instruction, I have a few ideas as to how I will choose the content of each piece: Food Chain, Car Scenario, Identity Issues, etc. Often times we as humans camouflage ourselves from different situations in life and the idea of new opportunities being introduced to us seems bizarre. I have always had a love for camouflage and viewed it as a sign of strength, especially being that I was tomboyish as a child. I’m from a town south of Nashville called Columbia, (known as the Mule Capital of the World) so I have always been exposed to southern living, especially hunting and cooking deer, rabbits, and squirrels. My exploration of aliens came from observing the Science Fiction network and Unsolved Mysteries all summer. The research I completed opened my eyes to a larger view of the terminology.

Soap Ad Self Critique

Throughout the production of this project, I have been working on ways to figure out the Affect Effects software. In the beginning, everything seemed so confusing but now I've grasp it a little more. I'm still in the process of remembering certain factors regarding the program, but I feel confindent that my productions from this point on, will improve. My soap advertisement is OK, in my opinion. I tried to incorporate everything we have learned in this past month and i just stuck with the basics. Overall, Im satisfied.

Research Topics

Existence/Extinction

I thought about experimenting with the idea of existence. Questions regarding: How existence came about? and Why we as human beings exist? I want explore the general meaning of existence; an understanding living things. Existence is not only a way of living, but also the presence or occurrence of something in a particular place or situation.

The Human Condition

The human condition can be approached in several ways. I thought about discovering the stages and developments in life, humans encounter. Issues concerning our anatomy, metaphysical state of being, sexuality, habitats, cultures, etc.

GREEN

I brainstormed about everything green. US currency, nature, traffic light=go, Marvel Comics “HULK”, Aliens, Camouflage, Dragons, Military forces, etc. Maybe creating abstracts production about how green is observed and its significance.

Sticking with the green idea....I've decided to explore the galaxy and aliens. Their worldview of earth and the way indivduals on each continent interact with their environment. I will create short animations placing them in certain aspects of our culture. Dealing with political and social issue, entertainment, crime, etc. Although this will be a challenge, I'm quite positive i can pull it off. I intend on making these animations comical and each will have a centalized theme or lesson towards the end, almost like a mini series. In some cases, audio will be present.

Ornamentation

Deconstruction B

Glade Candles

Browsing through the
November 2006 issue of Ebony magazine, I found an advertisement for Glade. Advertising and introducing the scented oil candles trio, these Christmas fragrances include apple cinnamon, French vanilla, and glistering snow. The image is very family oriented, suggesting that the product can be essential and enjoyable by a wide audience and doesn’t discriminate against age or gender. Glancing at this Ad, I was reminded of my family, home sweet home, and of course the holidays.

The female and male subjects in this Ad appear to be admiring the candles in their own way. These are my critiques of the personal revelations the members of this family are experiencing while viewing the candles: The father is maybe enjoying the smell, the mother, possible having a discussion with someone about the candles, and the young girl dazed by something she finds interesting (color, brightness of flame, etc).

Another important factor is the consumer would receive three candles if purchased, which would make this a money-saving product. The description of this Ad states, “Quickly fills the while room with style and your favorite holiday scents. They’ll get everyone’s attention.” And indeed, it gets everyone’s attention, as we observed in the family portrait.

This advertisement for Glade candle’s is very calm, smooth, and suttle, but the candles are being glorified is a very powerful way. As if to say, these are the best and are ranked higher than any other. Personally, it also seems to have some type of religious significance.
